Dungarvan CAHWT Protest Against Household Charge.

The "back door" is often referred to in the GAA, a second chance to further your prospects in your field so it were, but today it can be used simply to describe the route of access taken to the Dungarvan Civic Offices by two Fianna Fail members who seemed set on ignoring the members of the public protesting the Household Charge at the building's front.

Waterford County Council Worker's Protest Dungarvan - Unite

An emergency meeting of Unite members of Waterford County Council (including workers from Dungarvan Town Council) was called late yesterday evening after it emerged that two colleagues were suspended yesterday afternoon following difficulties with the implementation of restructuring measures which are regarded by staff as a threat to job security. Four more staff were rumoured to have been suspended this morning.

Many Still Angered As Household Charge Deadline Approaches

This Saturday 31st March sees the (first) culmination of two long drawn out Campaigns regarding the Household Charge, the efforts to implement it, and conversely those to prevent it.

I have personally spoken to many people in the Dungarvan area in the last few weeks, and attended meetings both in Town and in Waterford City as well as followed each move from both sides as the "battle" intensified.

CAHWT Household Charge Meeting Dungarvan

Household Charge Meeting Lawlor's Hotel Dungarvan

"We have paid too much into this ....private debt has been placed on the back of the everyday taxpayer....we can sit and take it or say enough is enough and reclaim our dignity....making a conscientious stand against a bad law"

John Halligan Independent TD Waterford

The 14th meeting organised by the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes in Waterford City and County was held Tuesday evening in Dungarvan and an attendance of 150 concerned householders was proportionately in keeping with earlier figures including the 800 that turned out in the Tower Hotel two weeks earlier. Whether this figure may have been higher if, earlier yesterday afternoon, the posters advertising the event had not been removed from the town's streets is hard to gauge.

Giovanni Trapattoni Visits Dungarvan!!!

Ireland Soccer Manager Giovanni Trapattoni took time out from what was a hectic day's schedule to be guest of honour at the official opening of the town's latest Cycling and Walking Path along which once ran the Waterford Dungarvan and Lismore Railway.  This redevelopment will now compliment the Smarter Travel Incentive from which the town was recently rewarded 7.2 million euro as one of only three locations nationwide to receive funding to encourage people to think differently about how they can travel, keep healthy and contribute to their local environment.

Waterford - Campaign Against Household & Water Charge Meeting

7:30 p.m and many feet and many voices began filling the spacious banquet hall, thirty minutes before the meetings scheduled start time.

Organised by CAHWT (Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes) it was soon apparent that the public had decided to show their displeasure at these new austerity measures in their droves, as more than double the 400 that had attended a Carlow event Monday evening, left their homes and descended on Waterford's Tower Hotel.

Dungarvan - Redeveloped Rail Tracks Cycling/Walking Paths

Yesterday was a day of firsts for 2012 the bicycle came out from an all too early seasonal retirement, and this combined with a unexpected notion to film something (maybe the Golden Globes and approaching Oscars?) led to the first post in a long time where I have pressed finger to keyboard as it were.

The re-development of the Waterford Lismore and Dungarvan Railway has been a long time coming and still proves to be a controversial project with the area of track directly following on from the above video falling directly behind a residential area where it seems opinions are divided over the merits of whether this is an improvement to overall security for those living in the area due to improved lighting or something of a loss of privacy as the tracks have been so dramatically cleared to accommodate the work. Somewhat a Catch-22 for residents.

However ,on the plus side those wishing to stretch their legs, walk the dogs or cycle around some of the most beautiful views that Dungarvan and Abbeyside/Ballinacourty has to offer then this is definitely the right place. Traversing the tides accompanied by a sea breeze invigorating you along the way it's reminiscent of a double ended pier allowing you to take in a panorama from Cruachan to Ring and Helvick. We are blessed to have this on our doorsteps and hopefully this work can only encourage others to come and experience what our town has to offer.

For more thorough and historical details of the Railway from inception to demise I recommend to you Waterford and Suir Valley Railway's web page and also AskAboutIreland.IE where there is a goldmine of information

Though I very much doubt I'll be meeting with Ricky Gervais at the Globes or parading the red carpet at Cannes anytime soon, I thought the outcome worthy enough for public perusal and the results have set me thinking of future projects....hopefully a video of how the track became buried under tonnes of dog shit won't be one of them. Pick it up people!!
